PART 1: Get Ready to Be Challenged and Encouraged
In 2011, I released Frederick Douglass Republicans: The Movement to Re-Ignite America’s Passion for Liberty. Since then, the book has grown in popularity among Conservatives through word of mouth. If you are new to my community, you probably don’t know my testimony and how the Frederick Douglass Republican (FDR) Engagement Strategy came about. In fact, my testimony is one you may personally relate with.
Several years ago, I was invited to a friend’s home to watch a college football game with 20 other African-Americans, all of whom were Democrats. The subject of politics came up. When I mentioned I was a Conservative-Republican, I was reviled immediately. Their name-calling was untrue and hurtful. It ran the gamut…
KCarl, you are an Uncle Tom, sellout and a house n-word. You are a traitor to your race. You should be ashamed of yourself. Your parents must be disappointed in you.
I’ve never felt so demeaned and belittled in all my life. Their insults made me search for answers.
I went home that evening thinking and mostly praying about an effective way to trump the race card and experience enjoyable Thanksgiving dinners again. I spent over a year researching. I became obsessed with his life and writings of Frederick Douglass. I went on a reading binge that included Douglass’ books, speeches, articles, letters, and interviews.
The ah-ha moment came when I created the FDR Engagement Strategy. I knew in my heart that the FDR Engagement Strategy was special.
Let me pause for a moment and point out that I grew up in a staunch Democrat and Christian home in Alabama. Also, I’m a graduate of Alabama A&M University, a historical black college. I say this because, as a Black Conservative, some people will ALWAYS doubt your sincerity, truthfulness and your blackness.
Those same 20 black Democrat friends were at my home watching college football a year later. The subject of politics surfaced once again. When asked about my political identity, I responded, “I’m more than a Conservative-Republican, I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican. I believe in his life empowering values, for example: (1) Respect for the U.S. Constitution; (2) Economic prosperity; (3) Free speech; (4) Personal responsibility; (5) Limited power of government; (6) Legal immigration; (7) Religious liberty, among others.” My guests immediately started talking about how they were a Frederick Douglass Republican too.
For the first time in my life, I won the narrative―having the confidence, knowledge and skills to engage my family, friends and acquaintances about our shared values.
Have you ever known something to be so exceptional that you couldn’t keep it to yourself? I shared the FDR Engagement Strategy with my black, white, Latino and Asian Conservatives friends, they used it and it worked like gangbusters.
My friend Patrick, from Nashville, shared this testimony: “I want to thank you for teaching me the FDR Engagement Strategy. I applied what you taught me, and I am hungry for more. You equipped me to handle the push-back. As a result, I have been able to change how many of my family members and friends vote.
